TERRY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Instead of learning reading, writing and arithmetic today, 1,300 students were sent home; not because they were in trouble, but they didn't have any water at the school.

“The county was replacing a culvert here on property and the water line was right next to it and they hit the water line, which put the town of Terry out of service,” said city water operator Heath Taylor.

“My water bottle would not fill up,’ said a Terry High Student.

No running water forced many parents to make last minute arraignments to pick up their teens.

“It was unexpected and I had to stop what I was doing, do it, But you know it is my child,” said a parent.

While some parents were calm about the short notice others were overflowing with frustration.

“It is an inconvenience for me," said a parent. "But you know if they knew the water was going to be out, I didn't get a recorded message or anything.”

Hinds County School District officials said an alert was sent out immediately to all parents by phone and social media, and the water issue was out of the their control. The city's water operator agrees.

“I know a lot of folks are frustrated but it is just part of it," said Heath Taylor. "It breaks all the time. It is nothing that nobody can help.”

The water pressure was back up and flowing to the school again and around town in an hour. New valves were also installed to hopefully prevent this outage from happening again.

Although the problem was fixed, Public Works officials said the city is under a boil water notice. School will resume Friday and the students will drink bottled water for drinking until the notice is lifted.
