WARREN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Warren County authorities are investigating a deadly shooting involving a man and his grandfather.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said just before noon Saturday, Warren County Sheriff's deputies responded to 840 Culkin Road, for a report of a person who had been shot.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found 25-year-old Justin Kirkley, suffering from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Pace said as deputies arrived, Kirkley's 77-year-old grandfather, Joseph Crist, turned a small caliber handgun over to the first deputy arriving at the scene.

It appears at this time that Kirkley was assaulting his grandfather when the grandfather produced a small caliber handgun and shot Kirkley in the chest at or near point-blank range.

Crist was transported by ambulance to Merit Health River Region, treated for injuries to his face, head and neck, believed to be inflicted by Kirkley.

"Like any violent death, the case will be thoroughly investigated and then turned over to the DA's office," Pace said.

"At this time, there's nothing to believe this was anything other than self-defense. Mr. Crist has the right to protect himself in his own home," Sheriff Pace added.

Pace said Kirkley had been out on bond for a 2013 murder charge. He' was also on probation with the Mississippi Department of Corrections for residential burglary.

Pace said his office had responded to several calls of disturbance or domestic violence involving Kirkley and his grandparents at that home. The most recent arrest was December of 2015, when Kirkley was charged by sheriff's deputies with domestic assault against the grandfather.

Kirkley's body has been transported to the state crime lab for autopsy.

Sheriff Pace said results on the autopsy aren't expected until sometime next week.
