Sorority collects luggage for children in foster care moving to new homes

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A local sorority is working to make sure children in foster care can transition in dignity.

The Jackson Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated is collecting suitcases for children who have been displaced and are in the foster care system.

The collection point Saturday morning was at the Mississippi Children's Museum.

The sorority is asking for donations of gently used luggage, duffel bags and more to give to the children in foster care.

There are approximately 3,700 children in Mississippi's foster care system.

The Caring Cases Suitcase Drive was prompted by a young man in foster care who felt worse each time he had to move.

"He said that he felt like trash and we asked why he felt like trash. It was because when he had to go from one home to another he had to put his clothes in a trash bag. So that impacted us to the point that we wanted to do something about that," said DST Jackson Alumnae Chapter President Julia Crockett.

If you were unable to donate luggage Saturday you may still do so by dropping it off on the third floor of 414 South State Street in Jackson or by calling 601-966-8668.
