Taking Back Our Neighborhoods: Nightmare on Northview Update

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A viewer emailed Three On Your Side about an abandoned apartment complex on Northview Drive in the capital city. I checked it out last week and to call it an eyesore and nuisance property is an understatement.

I contacted the city of Jackson's Community Improvement division to hear what they had to say about 3895 Northview Drive in this Taking Back Our Neighborhoods update.

Fire consumed several units of the old Northtowne Place apartment complex on Northview Drive. That was June 2008. Almost 8 years later, springtime growth and weeds are once again taking over the abandoned and dilapidated property and it has become a dumping ground; something that plagues homeowners like Denise Anderson, who lives across the street.

"I've been here for seven years and it's getting worser and worser," said Anderson.

Timothy Love's barber shop is next door and he said it's tough to do business in this environment.

"I feel like Jackson just need to do they part and, uh, just handle it," said Love. "Jackson trying to re-grow, so this will be a start."

There is a for sale sign and a banner on the property calling for a public hearing on proposed construction of Fondren Place here; the owner applying for Mississippi Housing Tax Credits. That was 2013. It never materialized.

"In addition, nobody's paying taxes on it," said Charles Alexander. "It's off the tax rolls for some reason."

Alexander is a businessman who owns property surrounding the eyesore. He said he's been trying to get something done about it for years now.

JPD officer Colendula Green said the property has gone through all the proper channels, including environmental court, and now it's a matter of securing the work.

"That's it. That's all that the community improvement is waiting on," said Green. "They're waiting on the quotes, the estimated costs, the right contractor. And once we're able determine that, we'll be able to come in and remove these buildings. Right now, we don't have a time frame. We can't really give a estimate time frame at this time, but we can say that we are doing the work in order to get the job done."

Three On Your Side will stay on top of this and I will keep you posted.
