JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Entergy says the future is bright as they begin to test solar power possibilities in this state.

A field full of solar panels is much different from the traditional power grids. the massive transmission lines and the nuclear power plants that feed electricity to your homes.

Entergy Mississippi's CEO says the pilot project will determine the future for solar power.

"Solar "grid modernization We are creating systems that will be more reliable and more intellectual and also we are looking at diversification of energy with the use of solar panels," said Haley Fisackerly.

Three thousand-768 solar panels are tracking the sun to generate power. They move one degree every 9 minutes. That power is then fed back into the Entergy system.

"Three of our sites are about 500 kw each and when they produce energy that is enough for about 175 homes," added Fisackerly. "And yes, we are putting solar energy on the grid right now...It's going into homes."

Entergy says the future is bright, and with the flip of a switch, the utility is moving into a new era.

Self sufficient Mississippians can erect their own renewable energy  power stations for their homes. In a ruling the Mississippi Public Service commission allows individuals to sell back their excess power to power companies to offset their utility bills.
