JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Advocates against domestic violence are pushing for legislation making it easier for victims of abuse to divorce abusive spouses.

The Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence held a news conference Wednesday morning.

The Coalition hopes to keep Senate Bill 2418, also known as the "divorce bill," in the spotlight.

The bill failed in the legislature. Had it passed, it would have added "domestic violence" as legal grounds for divorce in Mississippi.

"Currently they have to prove that it is habitual, cruel and inhumane treatment. By us pushing for legislation like this an individual will have more support and more resources in our legal system to assist them in getting a divorce," says Wendy Mahoney, the Executive Director for the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The Coalition will push for similar legislation next year.
