First female/African American undersheriff named in Hinds County

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A couple of firsts for Hinds County and the state of Mississippi; long time Jackson police officer Cheryl Matory has been named Hinds County Undersheriff by Sheriff Victor Mason. She becomes the first African American and the first female to hold this rank in the state of Mississippi.

Although she was appointed in January, she made the official announcement today.

"I would just like to say that I was introducing myself to the citizens of Hinds County as the undersheriff; letting them know that my door is always open," said Matory. "My ears are always in tune to listen, so if there's any problems, concerns, I'm here to address them."

Matory's duties and responsibilities include supporting the sheriff, directing operational and administrative activities, supervising patrol operations and overseeing the Corrections and Administrative Divisions within the department.
