FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A private school established during the era when Mississippi schools were forced to integrate has now established a Chief Diversity Officer who said diversity is not defined just by race. Jackson Preparatory School wants all families to know they are welcome.

"Maybe if there were families in the past that weren't quite sure if Jackson Prep would be a welcoming environment, we are here to let them know a new wind is blowing here at Jackson Prep and we are excited to serve a broader swath of families here in Jackson," said Head of School Dr. Jason Walton.

Jackson Preparatory School was the first in the history of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools to have a Chief Diversity Officer.

"It's something that needs to be done the right way and with respect and in an authentic manner," said Chief Diversity Officer Adam Mangana.

Just last year Prep elected its first ever African American homecoming queen. Mangana said this position is needed for the emerging leadership to navigate through the cross culture challenges that exist.

"One of the things I am really excited about is Jackson Prep already has diversity and it's not about going out and getting it," added Mangana. "It's about delivering for the families that are already here."

Many of the institutes of significance in higher learning in our state have made moves to have Chief Diversity Officers. Ole Miss, UMC and Mississippi State have their own versions.

"It's a great 2016 step to name a diversity officer and to take on the responsibility of advancing that agenda," added Dr. Walton.

This position was a part of Jackson Prep's Board of Trustees strategic plan. The position started in January 2016.
