Foster care in Mississippi is getting a fresh start. Responding to the threat of a federal takeover of the foster care program, Governor Phil Bryant has made changes.
On Friday, he signed a law that removes the program from the Department of Human Services. A total of $34 million will fund the new Department of Child Protective Services. New social workers have to be hired, and the Governor says that's a top priority.
"We have to know we have enough social workers to divide them so their case load is not so large that one of the children might be overlooked. That could cause a child the loss of their life, abuse," he says.
Dr. David Chandler has been appointed Commissioner of the Department.
