JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police say they're breaking new ground, cleaning up neighborhoods house by house. They're also hoping to eliminate havens for possible crimes to be committed.

Police say they've crossed a milestone in dealing with dilapidated properties.  203 demolished in 18 months, since community improvement was placed under the police department. They said their success came with a tough approach.

"The staff decided they would find out who owns these houses and we would call them and say we need you to come back and take care of your property so the tax payers don't," said Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance.

Chief Vance says they were also able to get many absentee landlords to clean up their properties, saving the city and taxpayers millions.

"We kind of killed two birds with one stone," added Vance. "We have gotten rid of a lot of blighted properties and also we've lowered the number of properties where people have an opportunity to take advantage and commit crimes."

Residents who lived near the decaying homes say good riddance.

Anglea Wright who lives on Marwood Drive where a home was demolished said,
"It looks wonderful we are happy," said Angela Wright, who lives on Marwood Drive, where a home was demolished. "They did a great job. It's wonderful."
