MHP launches "Click It or Ticket" campaign with candlelight vigil

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Local law enforcement is getting a head start on safety wi a new "coast to coast" seat belt enforcement effort as the Memorial Day holiday approaches.

This year's campaign focuses on getting you to buckle up, "click it or ticket."

Mississippi Highway Patrol officers staged a candlelight vigil to illustrate how many people lost their lives in traffic accidents simply because they didn't have their seat belts on.

"Three-hundred-thirteen people last year lost their lives in a vehicle accident, unrestrained, said MHP Staff Sgt. Andy West. "And the purpose of this ticket or click-it campaign is to decrease that number. Our intention is not to see how many tickets we can write, but rather next year, we want to decrease the number of candles that you saw on the table today."

MHP officials say May is one of the most deadly months to be traveling in Mississippi. Sixty-eight Mississippians died in crashes in May alone last year.

The "Click It or Ticket" campaign starts May 23 and ends June 5th.
