NEWTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Saturday, around 10:00 p.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a single car crash on Interstate 20 in Scott County.

A 2013 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 60-year-old Terry C. Burton, from Newton was traveling eastbound when his vehicle went off the road and collided with a traffic sign.

However, Senator Burton refuted that claim to our staff this morning.

When reached by phone Senator Burton said he swerved to avoid a deer and hit a sign.

He said he was given a breathalyzer test but was not arrested for DUI.

Hours after we talked to him, MHP spokesman Johnny Poulos confirmed that Burton was charged with driving under the influence.

Burton was transported to the Scott County Detention Center.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
