Governor Bryant vetoes bill supported by Education Department

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant has vetoed a bill that would have given the state Department of Education one more year of flexibility in how it fills some jobs and grants pay raises to some employees.

Bryant says the department has given "handsome" raises to some people in administrative jobs and high salaries to some people in new positions. Bryant says some increases were $20,000 or more.

However, the department said Monday that most of the raises were mandated by lawmakers, and some were given to employees who moved into higher-level jobs or who took on more responsibilities.

State Superintendent of Education Carey Wright says salaries "should match the education, experience and skill level required."

Bryant vetoed House Bill 199 on Friday.
