JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With a vote of 6 to 1, the Jackson City Council amended their shooting in the city ordinance to include mandatory jail time.

Violators caught firing a weapon will now face 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine.

Councilman Kenneth Stokes said, "That will send a message that these gun shots an all this gun violence needs to stop."

Stokes introduced the ordinance on behalf of residents in his ward, who he says are living in fear, hearing gunshots night after night.

"They're in their homes and they hear these gunshots it's like a war zone, and a lot of the young people they think it's a game and they're enjoying just shooting guns. They don't think they're hurting anybody," said Councilman Stokes.

Jackson police Chief Lee Vance said, "I'm just happy the council decided to support us and give us an ordinance with a bit more teeth in it so we can take people to jail when we find them violating this."

While police hope it's a deterrent, residents just hope it works.

Billy Graves, a Midtown resident said, "By catching them and giving them mandatory time it should put some fear in some of them but some just don't fear anything."

Gloria James also of Midtown said, "If the consequences carry a steep stipulation it might, then again it might not it might hurt an innocent person that was protecting themselves."
