JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Residents of Windsor Park Apartment were horrified as they made their way to their cars early Tuesday morning, finding broken glass, shattered windows and stolen items.

According to Jackson Police, 12 cars were broken into near units toward the back of the complex.

Two of the cases are being investigated as auto burglaries. The rest are being investigated asmalicious mischief.

The first calls to police began around 6:30 a.m.

"We were told that the gate did malfunction, said JPD Officer Colendula Green. "They are in the process of getting security but it's up to the apartment complex to provide reasonable and adequate security."

One resident said not only was her driver's side window destroyed, the inside of her Nissan Altima was rain-soaked.

Investigators said a wedding ring and a check were among the stolen property.

"With these items taken use common sense," added Green. "You know that you shouldn't have these items in your vehicle."

The repeated sounds of breaking glass should have awakened some tenants but police say there is no security at the complex and no surveillance cameras to help with the investigation.

"Officers did canvas the area and they did gather some witness statements," said Green. "But once again it's still to early to determine. We're still investigating it."

"We take our residents' sense of well-being very seriously and are cooperating with the Jackson Police Department's investigation to find those responsible," said Lisa Domm, Director of Marketing for Ambling Management Company. "We believe this is an isolated incident and have coordinated with Jackson PD to increase their patrol presence at the community as the investigation continues.".

Call the Jackson Police Department  at 601-355-TIPS or text TIP 411 if you know anything about these crimes.
