Mental health initiative that focuses on children holds kickoff in Jackson

Nearly thirty five thousand children in Mississippi have mental health needs. Several groups are working together on an infant and early childhood mental health initiative in Jackson.

The program is called BUDS, Beginnings Determine Success. The goal is to make sure young children blossom as they grow by providing a healthy start, including addressing social and emotional challenges.

"We know that one thing that can be a significant barrier for young children, the social and emotional challenges that are not addressed," said Dr. Joy Hogge, Executive Director of Families As Allies. "In fact there's children in pre-school who are expelled for behavior problems more than children in high school."

BUDS is getting support from Families as Allies, Mississippi Families for Kids and The City of Jackson.
