Drowning victim remembered at Murrah High School

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A day before their high school graduation Murrah students gathered to remember one of their own Monday night. Eighteen-year old Melvin Mangum Jr. died Friday. His senior class will graduate Tuesday evening.

Monday night they paused to honor and remember the friend, student, and football player who was loved by many.

Friday night, Mangum drowned in Primos Lake in Flowood. He was trying to swim to shore after the boat he was fishing in capsized.

Friends say Mangum had a bright future and will be missed. His coach says the loss has been hard to accept.

"He was a free spirit. For a city kid, you know, he had a lot of Mississippi in him now, I can tell you that," said Head Football Coach Zack Grady. "He was a hunter, he was a fisherman, he was an outdoorsman, he was a runner, he was a racer. He was just a kid that enjoyed being outside."

Right after the vigil,  family members and friends shared prayers and memories of Mangum, Balloons bearing his number 3 were released.
