JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

You get what you pay for, and for one Jackson resident that equaled a new street.

A Jackson homeowner claims he paid for an asphalt paving job on a bad part of the street at the end of his driveway, out of his own pocket. He wants to stay anonymous, but he says he had no choice.

He and his neighbors say they waited over nine months for the city to respond to calls to the Mayor's action line.

When they didn't fix the street, the homeowner hired his own contractor who came and paved the street Monday, to the joy of all his neighbors.

The street problem has persisted for some time. A Google street maps image from 2014, shows gravel in part of the street, next to a newly paved area.
It's not clear how much it cost to pave the street, or if was even legal.

We contacted the city to see what they thought about private contractors paving public streets. We are still waiting to hear back from them.
