A seven-year-old has died in a Jackson hospital from complications from a near drowning at a Meridian apartment complex. Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler says Corniyah Pate of Newton was pulled from the bottom of the Stratford Manor pool just before 6 p.m. Thursday.
When paramedics arrived, people on the scene were already performing CPR. She was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson. She died around 3 a.m. Friday morning.
"She died of what's called anoxic brain injury, which is a fancy way of saying she went too long without oxygen getting to the brain, said Cobler. It was caused by the drowning.
Cobler says unfortunately, deaths like this become more common during the summer.
