We caught up with Lester Smith as he was walking inside the Warren County Jail to visit his nephew. Dexter Smith was arrested Monday for murdering his girlfriend Mary Warren. Police said she died of blunt force trauma to the head and was found inside her home in Vicksburg Monday.
“I don't know the situation," said Smith. "That is why I am checking with Dexter and I want to hear it out of his mouth.”
When we asked about Dexter and Mary's relationship, Smith claims they were happy.
“They had a wonderful relationship, they were saving money to buy an automobile,” said Smith.
Lester Smith admits his nephew is no stranger to crime in Vicksburg.
“If you look at Dexter's criminal background, everyone in the town should be amazed," said Smith. "Why was he on the street in the first place.”
Smith’s uncle said his family is not taking sides for now, they are just searching for answers in this tragedy.
“Ms. Mary was such a sweet person. What I would like to say to her family is we are going to get to the bottom of it one way another," said Smith. "If Dexter did this, he should be executed and if he didn't he should be exonerated.”
