RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you've noticed more people out running on Wednesday, you're not alone.

Millions of folks across the world are hitting the pavement and taking a run to celebrate "Global Running Day".

To celebrate, Fleet Feet Sports is hosting a day of running and walking called "All 4 Run," where participants can take advantage of one, two or three fun runs or walks.

The first run kicked off at 6 a.m.

Global Running Day is a day for runners to celebrate the sport.

The day is also meant to encourage individuals who are thinking about becoming more active to take the steps to a healthier lifestyle.

"We want to get people off the couch," said Lesley Holleman, owner of Fleet Feet Sports in Ridgeland. "We want to encourage people to start walking or running and just get fit. Mississippi has a high obesity rate. We're unfit as a state and we just want to get people moving."

Running and walking briskly can benefit your health by lowering your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. All three health conditions are risk factors for heart disease.

Runner Eric Graham says running has improved his lifestyle.

"I'm in better shape now then I've ever been," said Graham. "I'm coming up on a big birthday later this year and I'm fitter today than I was certainly ten years ago, and maybe even 20 years ago."

The next run-walk will begin at 6 p.m. Monday night at Fleet Feet Sports on Highway 51.
