MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two people wanted for car theft at the Kroger on Highway 51 in Madison are now in custody with the Madison Police Department.

On Wednesday, May 25, a man and woman were seen in a white Lexus with a dark colored strip at the bottom of the car.

The woman was driving the car, while the man was the passenger.

The man was wearing a yellow shirt, shorts, flip-flops and black sunglasses.

He located a yellow Chevrolet Camaro in the parking lot and returned to the Lexus while the woman got out and stole the Camaro.

Both the man and woman left the parking lot; the man was driving the Lexus and the woman was driving the Camaro down Highway 51.

Through the assistance of Chevrolet OnStar and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office the stolen vehicle was recovered a short time later on Old Yazoo City Road in Canton.

There were no occupants or suspects present when it was recovered.

The victim reported that a firearm and her purse were missing from the recovered car.

Officers and investigators reviewed video surveillance of the store and parking area and were able to determine that the couple had found the victim’s car key in the parking lot and had stolen the car.

On Thursday, investigators received an anonymous tip as to the identity of the man shown over surveillance.

The man was identified as 32-year-old Joseph E. Popeof Raymond and the woman as 31-year-old Betty L. Shannon-Dayof Terry.

That night, investigators, along with deputies from the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Pope and Shannon-Day at a home in Terry.

Both have been booked with one count of auto theft and remain at the Madison County Detention Center awaiting their initial court appearance.

The stolen purse and firearm have not been recovered.
