BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In Brandon, a group of ducklings are learning to swim in a rain puddle after their home disappeared.

A Google Earth image from April of 2014 shows Crossgates Lake at it's normal level, but a more recent image shows the lake resembling more of a giant crater after it was drained last summer.

Silt buildup was being blamed for suffocating the lakes fish, which resulted in a large fish kill last summer.

The city had no choice but to drain the lake after.

"It reduced the oxygen levels in the lake and basically everything in the Crossgates area drains into Crossgates Lake," said Darion Warren, Brandon Public Works director. "So over time siltation just accumulated."

Warren says work to repair the lake is starting with shoring up this creek that feeds it.

Two sewage lines are also being repaired since they are now exposed with the water levels down.

"The next step is to come in and remove the silt that has accumulated which won't take place until September," Warren added.

The view from Joe Hammon's backyard is not what it once was, and his grand kids will have to wait a while to go fishing, but he says in the end it will all be worth it.

Joe Hammons said,  "The lake contains about 40 acres it's just really good to be here on the water were really grateful for what the city is doing to get it back to where we can really enjoy it."
