JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The federal government has approved Medicaid to cover mosquito repellent, as concerns about the Zika virus are spreading globally.

The Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called Microcephaly.

This disease is already taking a heartbreaking toll, as the 3rd baby born with the disease in the U.S. has died.

Zika can be spread through sex from an infected partners and you may not even know that you are infected.

Health and Human Services sent an informational letter to the Mississippi Medicaid division that said Medicaid services can help prevent, detect, and respond to the Zika virus.

The letter states how low-income people, covered by Medicaid, can protect themselves.

Medicaid will cover the cost of mosquito repellent, if prescribed by an authorized health professional.

The best way to fight the bite, is to use insect repellents with Deet and certain other active ingredients.

Although the only U.S. residents with Zika got the disease while traveling abroad, there are three confirmed cases reported here in Mississippi.

There is currently no vaccine or cure for the Zika virus.

The Mississippi Division of Medicaid's response on this mosquito repellent is below:

"Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM) officials are giving the guidance issued Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services, which grants states permission to cover mosquito repellents prescribed by health professionals, careful consideration. DOM will weigh the effect this might have on current policies and seek the opinion of health-care providers in Mississippi before additional coverage is decided upon."
