STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -

Austin Sexton threw 6 1/3 impressive innings to lead Mississippi State past Cal State Fullerton 4-1 in the NCAA tournament's Starkville Regional on Saturday night.

Mississippi State (43-16-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead while Sexton held Cal State Fullerton's offense in check. Sexton, a right-hander, gave up just one run on five hits and struck out four. Blake Smith threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his fifth save.

The Bulldogs advance to Sunday's championship game. Cal State Fullerton will face Louisiana Tech earlier on Sunday to see who will face Mississippi State. The winner would have to beat Mississippi State twice to win the regional championship.

Mississippi State led 1-0 going into the 7th inning and extended that lead to 3-0 thanks to run-scoring singles by Jake Mangum and Ryan Gridley.

Cal State Fullerton (36-22) managed just five hits, two from Josh Vargas.
