People flock to gravel pit on day 5 of recovery

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mine Safety and Health Administration officials confirmed Tuesday night that a cab of one of the trapped vehicles had been uncovered , but no body was found. Workers were going on to try to uncover the excavator.

Day Five of the Green Brothers Gravel Company recovery in the search for Emmitt Shorter and James "Dee" Hemphill brought more interest and curiosity in the around the clock efforts.

Many have been following the process since Friday's landslide and entrapment.

Among them is a mutual friend of Emmit Shorter, Jackson native LaShaunda Williams.

"I think it's terrible. I don't think it should have taken that long. I don't think we should be at day 5 by now," said Williams.

Traffic along Harmony Road has increased at the gravel pit with well wishers, family and others coming here for the latest news.

"It's just sad to be here witnessing it and feeling the pain. It's awful," said Williams.

She and her husband have known Shorter for years and have been following news of the tragic accident since Friday afternoon.

"Just the situation at hand it's heartbreaking, it's just so heartbreaking and I've sat and watched the stories and cried and I just had come and see for myself what's really going on, what's being done," said Williams.

Tuesday, officials allowed the media to see the progress made at the pit since pumps arrived to remove water, sludge and gravel.

A state rescue and recovery team is on site and executing a plan for extraction from the cabs.

A process Williams will be keeping up with as she returns to her home in New Orleans while praying for Shorter, Hemphill and their families.

"Can you imagine someone close to you or someone you know, a family member being in that situation, pretty much the same feeling," added Shorter.

MEMA spokesman Ray Coleman said although one of the cabs had been reached at the incident site no one had been recovered.
