CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Family, friends and former classmates say the missing gravel pit worker that emergency crews are still searching for is Emmitt Shorter.

Many people from his old high school are praying for a miracle.

School officials said Emmitt Shorter attended Crystal Springs High school until 2011. In that short time, he made a big impact on many.

“He was a family man and he had a little girl that loved him to death,” said former Crystal Springs High School student, Carlton Brown.

Alumni of Crystal Springs High School, as well as those who work at the school, reminisced on the good things about Shorter as crews work to find him in the gravel pit where he has been trapped for a week.

“I know him well. He was a great young man.”

Brown graduated from high school more than decade before Shorter, but said he remembers him as outgoing and friendly in school and around the community.

“He was an outspoken young man. Every time I saw him. He was always like to talk and play with me a lot,” said Brown.

Bill Broadhead is the principal of the Crystal Springs High School.

He said many of his staff and people who know Shorter said he was a pleasure to be around.

“All those who have been speaking of him have been remembering what charismatic fun, loving and hard worker that he was,” said Broadhead.

To help the school and the community cope with this unprecedented gravel pit crisis, he’s been encouraging everyone on Facebook to pray during this tough time.

“We are proud of our school and the graduates that have come out of Crystal Springs. We are a family and when one part of our family hurts the whole family hurts, so we were devastated to hear of the news for both families,” Broadhead.
