FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Orlando's mass shooting that left dozens injured, brought to the forefront of our attention the immediate need for blood.

When such a tragedy strikes, the already short supply of universal blood types is quickly depleted.

"If you're near a blood center anywhere, even close to you, we're asking you to come out and donate," said Mississippi Blood Services P.R. and Communications Manager Merle Eldridge. "It's super important."

Hundreds stood in line to donate blood in Orlando following Sunday morning's mass shootings.

Lines wrapped around the Florida blood bank in response to the critical need.

Mississippi Blood Services is issuing an urgent plea.

"This incident is one of those tragedies that truly shows us how important it is for people to come out and donate blood and stay ahead of those tragedies," said Eldridge.

Just last week, the Mississippi blood bank announced that supplies of O+, O-, B+ and B- were critically low, hampering their preparation for car accidents, routine treatments and surgeries, and tragic events such as these.

"We had one hospital that transfused over 53 units in one day of just O+," said Eldridge. "So we want to make sure donors are coming out, keeping our shelves stocked."

According to officials, 49 people were shot and killed and many more were injured in the shooting at the Pulse night club, putting area blood banks in crisis.

"We work closely with all of the blood centers across the country and right now we're just encouraging people to come out, and if they want to donate in support of victims and the families in Orlando please do so," added Eldridge.

Mississippi Blood Services has three locations: Flowood, Greenville and Oxford.

The Main Center, in Flowood, is located at 115 Tree St. (off of Treetops Blvd).
