JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The confederate flag symbol is making headlines once again and the Southern Baptist Convention is speaking out about the controversy.

William Perkins, Jr., editor of The Baptist Record, said, "As a white, native southerner, there is very little way that I can relate to someone who sees the flag in a painful and suffering way."

Southern Baptists overwhelmingly passed a resolution to move forward from the confederate flag symbol at the Southern Baptist Convention .

Perkins said the Confederate battle flag resolution is another step in the convention's effort to address its past actions regarding slavery and racism.

"There are a significant amount of people that this causes great pain and suffering," said Perkins. "It's time to move on and advance the Christian witness without having this stumbling block in front of us, as we try and win Mississippi and the world of Jesus."

This resolution was not specifically directed at Mississippi.

The resolutions calls for Christians, who display the flag, to consider removing it because of the impact it is causing on others.

"Following the example of the Apostle Paul, if it causes them pain and causes them to stumble in their Christian life, it's time to change the flag," Perkins said. "It's time to remove the stumbling block to our Christian witness and to move on in the 21st century."
