Juneteenth celebrations kick off weekend

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Juneteenth Jackson kicked off at Charles Tisdale Library Friday morning.

The event is a held as a commemoration of Juneteeth, the date recognized the end of slavery in the United States.  

Children played, danced, enjoyed food and were told the importance of the celebration.

June 19, 2016 marks the 151st anniversary of Juneteenth, also known as "Juneteenth Independence Day" or "Freedom Day".

Several Juneteenth events will be held in the metro area this weekend:

Friday, June 17, 2016

-Juneteenth in the Park, 7:00 pm, $5 admission

Saturday, June 18, 2016

-Canton Juneteenth Celebration, A.M. Rogers Park, 7:00 am - 6:00 pm

-Leake County Juneteenth Celebration, Lincoln Park and Community Center, Carthage, 10:00 am

-Juneteenth Festival, Battlefield Park, Jackson, 1:00 pm - 7:00pm

-Juneteenth Jackson 2016 Parade, Farish Street District, 2:00 pm - 8 pm
