NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The National Park Service Travel Club rates their favorite tour guides and rangers, periodically, and then they give out what they call their “Flat Hat” award to their favorite.

Well, Barney Schoby at Melrose in Natchez won the award recently. ,

“Believe it or not Walt, I didn’t even know the award existed," said Barney. "I had no idea there was a National Park Service Travel Club that chooses one ranger from all 411 parks to be their Flat Hat guy.”

Barney knows the group and their award exists now. He won it.

His Boss, Kathleen Bond, the Superintendent of the Natchez National Historical Park, was surprised only because Barney has been a park ranger such a short time. But other than that, it’s perfectly logical that he would be a favorite.

“Barney has such unique traits because of his curiosity about human nature and about history," said Bond. "And he is just overflowing with people skills. And so in that sense I was not surprised to see this recognition.”

“You try to give the best tour you possibly can," said Barney. "If it’s one or one hundred, everybody gets the same tour. And you never want anybody to walk out of that gate without having an experience that’s life changing.”

“Natchez, Mississippi, is a unique place in this country," added Kathleen. "Nationally significant but also charming as a small town, and for the friendly nature of its people. And I think Barney just exemplifies that. And so it’s really just a meeting of the best of all worlds, these beautiful resources we have the at the park along with the upbringing he got as a Natchezian that made him ready to go out and greet the world.”

So congratulations to ranger Barney Schoby at Melrose at the Natchez National Historical Park, most recent recipient of the National Park Travel Club’s Flat Hat Award. Natchez and Mississippi has a great story, and it’s even better when we have an award-winning storyteller telling it.

By the way, Melrose is open every day of the week except Thursday and Friday right now. So go see Barney Saturday through Wednesday and tell him I said hello.
