VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The reigning Miss Mississippi, Hannah Roberts, will soon exchange her gowns and tiara for scrubs.

She is heading to medical school in just a few months. But this week she is preparing to crown the new Miss Mississippi.

Hannah Roberts put off a year of medical school to represent the state. The 23-year-old Mt. Olive native was a Quality of Life Finalist at the Miss America Pageant.

Her platform, Pages of Love, has donated 42 thousand books to shelters, hospitals, clinics and schools.

"Hopefully, you know, in 10 or so years when I have my own office, I'll be able to have Pages of Love books sitting there that I can hand to children to take home," said Roberts.

At the Miss America Pageant she performed on the national stage. She was first runner up to Betty Cantrell.

"Me still standing at the end of the night was just a blessing in itself," Roberts told us. "It wouldn't have mattered you know if my name had been called or not."

This fall she will be a long way from the bright lights and glamour of the pageant. She will begin her first year of Medical School at UMMC in Jackson.

Roberts says thanks to the Miss Mississippi and Miss America programs, her scholarship money is a big help.

"I will be very, very well taken care of in comparison to so many others that go to medical school and end up $300, $500 thousand  in debt when they get out," added Roberts.

While Roberts will be hitting the books she says she has ambassadors all over the state who will continue her work with Pages of Love. In the meantime she is preparing to close this chapter when she crowns the new Miss Mississippi.
