JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Calling it an "unfortunate fact" that Hinds County DA Robert Smith was arrested for criminal charges, Hinds County Circuit Judge Jeff Weill issued an order Thursday evening barring Smith from prosecuting any cases in his court.

Judge Weill made it clear, though Smith is not welcome in his courtroom, this order does not affect the dockets of other judges. This means if the judge allows it, Smith can try other pending cases in the courtrooms of other Hinds County judges.

Judge Weill also disqualified Smith from having any dealings with any grand jury proceedings in Hinds County.

In fact Smith is barred from even speaking with members of his staff about Grand Jury proceedings. Weill stated in his order that he is attempting to "protect the integrity of the judicial process."

Smith is accused of providing criminals with information that would help their cases. And sources close to the investigation say more charges are possible.

Weill hinted in his order that it might be necessary to appoint a temporary acting District Attorney while Smith sorts through his legal issues.
