JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Miss Mississippi 2016 spoke to the media Sunday morning following her crowning Saturday night.

Laura Lee Lewis came to the competition as Miss Dixie and walked away with the state title. She said she worked four years toward the dream of becoming Miss Mississippi.

The Brookhaven native said she is thrilled to go to the Miss America Pageant and represent the state.

"'This morning, I woke up and I thought 'ok it's time to just go home and unpack and rewind', but I looked over to my left and there's a crown and a sash that says Miss Mississippi right next to me. Is this real?" said Lewis.

The Mississippi State University graduate won a $10,000 scholarship with the title and said she has also received more than $24,000.00 in scholarships in the past four years.

The elementary education major has no college debt and will be able to pursue her Master's Degree and PhD debt-free thanks to the Miss Mississippi program.
