RICHLAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Richland Police are investigating what appears to be a work related attempted murder suicide. It happened around 6 p.m., Tuesday, near Southeastern Freight Lines on Leggett Drive.

Richland Police Chief Russel James said at least eight shots were fired into the victim's black Chevrolet Impala near the work site.

The victim, a Southeastern Freight employee, then drove to the Richland Police Department for help. His name has not been released.

James said the alleged shooter is dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Witnesses said the gunman had been fired prior to the shooting.

"He pulled up to the station, obviously, shot multiple times and said 'I need help, somebody shot me'. So that's where it started," said Chief James. "That's the information they got and they responded back up there, and then of course the business called and said look this guy just showed back up at the business, pulled in the parking lot."

James said the victim was taken to UMMC with the serious and possibly life-threatening injuries.

Investigators are trying to determine if this shooting is connected to a freight company shooting Monday in Jacksonville, Florida. 50-year-old Marty Coffey was shot and killed at Old Dominion Freight Line in Jacksonville, Florida on Monday.

According to Coffey's LinkedIn profile, he worked at Southeastern Freight in Richland as a Service Center Manager for 15 years, before leaving in 2014.

James said more information would be released on this investigation Wednesday morning.
