JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police have identified the suspect in a gas station shooting and a hit-and-run that took place early Wednesday morning.

Just after 2:30 Wednesday morning, Jackson police responded to a shooting at the Citgo Service Station on Medgar Evers Blvd.

According to authorities, a 53-year-old Robert Crosslin was shot multiple times in the chest. He was transported to UMMC and he is listed in critical condition.

During the course of the investigation, police learned that 36-year-old Jerome Heard approached the Crosslin as he sat in his vehicle. Heard fired several shots striking the victim.

The incident was unprovoked and Heard fled the scene in a maroon Toyota Camry.

Around 3:42 a.m., JPD officers investigated a pedestrian hit by a car in the 300 block of Bounds St.

39-year-old Dyress Hill was transported to UMMC with a broken jaw. He is in stable condition.

Police learned that Hill was in the vehicle with Heard in this area and there was an fight where, allegedly, Heard pushed him out of the car and then ran him over.

Heard then fled the scene.

A handgun was recovered at the scene that is believed to be connected to the shooting of Crosslin, that took place earlier in the morning.

"Crime is just going rampant here in the city. I don't think there's a whole lot that can be done about it," says Jackson resident Perry Williams. "The police can't be everywhere all the time,"

Officers later responded to the 2300 block of Overbrook Dr. and detained Jerome Heard without incident.

Heard has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of convicted felon in possession stemming from Wednesday morning’s incidents.

He was also charged with an additional count of aggravated assault and additional count of convicted felon in possession of a firearm
stemming from an incident that occurred on Monday, June 27, 2016, where he allegedly fired shots at a victim in the area of Idaho St.

There were no injuries reported in this incident.

Heard is currently being held and awaiting an initial court appearance.

This is an ongoing investigation and more charges are possible.
