HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A large fire, burning out of control, rapidly spread across a field in Hinds County Saturday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Victor Mason, Entergy notified authorities of the fire on Lebanon Pine Grove Road near Dry Grove Road.

Shortly after 3 p.m., units were called to respond to the expanding fire.

Entergy officials said power lines fell sparking the flames that overtook a large field.

Hinds County E.O.C. Director Ricky Moore said additional manpower and a bulldozer were requested to assist in putting out the fire.

Officials said the blaze was not threatening homes in the area.

Searing temperatures also took their toll on firefighters.

"The heat's made it extremely difficult on volunteers and the other personnel on the fire scene," said Learned Volunteer Fire Chief Alvin Woods. "We're having to have AMR treat people for heat exhaustion."

Crossroads, Learned, Raymond, Terry and Utica Fire Departments and other volunteers, along with the Forestry Commission worked to stop the advancing fire.
