JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Flashing back to 1996 when the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum welcomed its first visitors.

Built on Lakeland Drive next to Smith Wills Stadium, the facility was established to highlight and memorialize Mississippians who excelled in their chosen sport.

The City of Jackson donated the land to the Mississippi Sports Foundation, which operated the museum.

The first executive director was Michael Rubenstein, who had served as WLBT's sports director and main sports anchor for many years. "Rube," as he was called, was at the front door to greet those who came out on opening day.

The 21,000-square-foot facility uses sight, sound and motion to tell the stories of countless local athletes.
