MHP investigating 6 deadly crashes over July 4th weekend

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded its 2016 Fourth of July enforcement period from Friday, July 1, at 6 p.m. to Monday, July 4 at midnight.

Throughout the period, MHP issued 7877 citations with 182 DUI arrests.

Officers issued 444 seat belt citations, along with 71 child restraint violations.  

MHP says 131 crashes were investigated, including 6 deadly accidents and 75 injuries on state, federal highways and interstate systems.

  • On Saturday, July 2, one pedestrian died in Pike County after being hit by a car on MS 44. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.
  • 77-year-old Willie R. King, of Meridian, was traveling southbound in a Chevrolet pickup truck, on MS 145, in Lauderdale County, when he tried to left turn across traffic. Another Chevrolet pickup traveling northbound on MS 145 hit the passenger side of King's pickup. King was transported to a local hospital where he died due to injuries sustained in the crash.

  • 26-year-old Colton L. McConnell, of Meridian, was traveling Southbound on MS 19, in Lauderdale County, when the car he was driving left the roadway and flipped. McConnell was partially ejected and pronounced dead on scene.

  • A 2010 Chevrolet, driven by 61-year-old Darrel J. Hatmaker, of Philadelphia, MS, was traveling westbound on MS 16 in Neshoba County, when it crossed the centerline and collided head on with an SUV. Hatmaker was pronounced dead on scene.

  • 23-year-old Russell W. Cox, of Crowder, MS was traveling southbound, in a Chevrolet car, on MS 3, in Quitman County. The car left the road and flipped. Cox was pronounced dead on scene due to injuries sustained in crash.

  • A 2016 Buick passenger vehicle, driven by 70-year-old Walter L. Leaks, of Crenshaw, MS, was traveling southbound on MS 3, when the car left the road and ended up in ditch. Leaks was pronounced dead on scene.

All crashes remain under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol
