Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason has asked the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to investigate the murder of Raymond Detention Center inmate Sammy James Christmas.
The 41-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell on July 1. Since that time, the sheriff's department has been waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart identified the man as Sammy Christmas, also known as Sammy Davis. She determined that Davis had internal bleeding caused by blunt force trauma, consistent with assault.
Christmas' cellmate, 36-year-old Joseph McAllister of Meridian, is being held pending murder charges.
Sheriff Mason told us Christmas was given medicine at 5 a.m. that day, and received food 45 minutes later.
