DUI charges upgraded for driver in crash that injured deputy

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

DUI charges have been upgraded against an undocumented immigrant who authorities say crashed into a Rankin County Deputy on Friday.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said Nehemias Abraham Tema-Lopez now faces DUI mayhem under the influence of alcohol causing serious injuries.

He was also charged with lack of a driver's license and insurance. 

Deputy Dustin Smith was injured in the accident on Highway 43 in Rankin County.

Investigators said the deputy was responding to a call when the SUV crossed the center line and hit his patrol cruiser. 

Smith has undergone surgery and is recovering at home.

Tema-Lopez remains in the Rankin County jail .
