(RNN) - French and international media are reporting multiple deaths and many more injured after a semi-truck intentionally plowed into a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France. Witnesses said the single driver accelerated through the crowd, leaving no doubt that attack was intentional. Hundreds more fled.
CNN is reporting that their news partner said someone in the truck exchanged gunfire with police, but no officials have confirmed a link to terrorism.
The mayor of Nice has said "dozens" of people are dead. Early reports said as many as 30 are feared dead. Mayor Christian Estrosi tweeted to the people of Nice to stay in their homes and wait for more information.
Bastille Day is similar to the Fourth of July in the U.S. It celebrates the storming of the Bastille, a prison in the center of Paris. The attack happened after a fireworks display.
Images and video posted on social media show people running from the scene and multiple injured people. .
Witnesses have reported a single driver who intentionally accelerated into the crowd and mowed people down. "Bodies are everywhere," a witness told AP.
Nice is located in southeast France on the Mediterranean Sea.
