Yet another ATM burglary attempt overnight, this time in Canton. It happened at the intersection of highway 43 and highway 16, where burglars caused a lot of damage trying to get inside it.
Canton police say officers arrived there when the alarm sounded at 1:30 Thursday morning. They found the back door open and burn marks on it, which raised a red flag.
"The back door was open, they said it looked like it had some type of explosive because there was a burn on the door, said Police Chief Otha Brown. "But we believe someone used a blow torch or something, got inside of it and once they got inside the alarm went off."
Even though the burglars tried pretty hard to get into a safe, no cash was taken.
Canton police called in the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to assist in the case. They are in the process of reviewing surveillance video, hoping to narrow down a suspect.
"It's a busy intersection," added Chief Brown. "I guess at that time of night traffic was probably out slow moving so we don't know right now, no one has come forward and said they saw anyone over there we don't know."
Police in Canton are now increasing patrols around ATMs and convenience stores, hoping to prevent any thefts in the future.
