According to WTOK, Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose confirms that 26-year-old Chris Smith was shot and killed at Frank Berry Courts on 8th St. Friday night.
Authorities say they are investigating the cause of the shooting and searching for a suspect.
The shooting happened about 10:45 Friday night, where police responded to Frank Berry Courts where a person had been shot.
Chris Smith played football at Meridian High School and was a wide receiver at Mississippi State from 2009-2012.
Mississippi State's head football coach Dan Mullen released a statement about Smith's death.
"We are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Chris. Our entire Mississippi State family mourns his loss. Chris was an important part of our first recruiting class and helped set the foundation for our success. He was a terrific teammate and his work ethic was impeccable. He earned his way onto the field as a true freshmen in 2009 and later received his degree from Mississippi State. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends."
Smith played in 48 games from 2009-12, recording 109 catches for 1,180 yards and five touchdowns. His 109 receptions rank 10th in MSU career history.
As a junior in 2011, he led the Bulldogs with 35 catches for 330 yards and two scores. He followed that up with 47 catches for 564 yards and two touchdowns as a senior.
He was a member of three State bowl squads, including the victorious 2011 Gator Bowl and 2011 Music City Bowl teams.
Many of Smith's former teammates and opponents took to social media to express their thoughts.
