JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson woman was sentenced to 15 years in jail and 5 years probation for the 2014 DUI homicide of a 21-year-old man.

21-year-old Joshua Hardin was ejected from an SUV and killed instantly.

Linda Cook held tightly to a framed picture of her grandson in court on Wednesday.

"Tiffani Martin decided to climb behind the steering wheel drunk and now he is gone, just gone. Ripped away from us. That didn't have to happen. A father and mother are left without their only son," she read out loud in court.

"Grief doesn't get any easier, it is like having your heart ripped out of your chest every single day over and over again," she went on to say. "I not only lost my grandson I lost my faith. I tried bargaining with God, pleading to please take me instead. But no, it's supposed to be like this."

The wreck happened on March 30, 2014 just after 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of TV Road and Highway 18. Police said Martin, who was not injured, was driving an F-150 truck and struck a Toyota 4Runner.

Hardin was a passenger of the 4Runner and died at the scene after he and another passenger were ejected from the vehicle. The other two people occupying the SUV were not injured.

Martin was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with aggravated DUI.

"Josh will never be truly in love; he will never marry someone who will be with him forever. He loved children yet he will never feel the joy that he gave us when we held him as a beautiful baby," Cook read. "Never know what awe and wonder as he holds his own child. He had his whole life ahead of him. Tiffani Martin took that away forever."
