TISHOMINGO COUNTY (Mississippi News Now) -

A man is in jail in Tishomingo County accused of hitting a sheriff's deputy and trying to get his gun.

Sheriff John Daugherty says 33-year-old Christopher Allen Whitfield of Paden was confronted by a deputy Tuesday in the Paden area who was checking an area where Whitfield was accused of getting into vehicles.

According to law enforcement, Whitfield had a large knife and put it down after being ordered by the deputy.

Whitfield is accused of resisting the deputy when the deputy tried checking Whitfield for more weapons.

The deputy says Whitfield started hitting him and tried to go for the deputy's gun when they both fell to the ground during the confrontation. The deputy was able to get control of the man.

Whitfield is charged with aggravated assault on a policeman, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
