Press Release from Mississippi Braves
Patrick Weigel hurled seven shutout innings, Carlos Franco smacked a three-run homer, and the Mississippi Braves beat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 5-0 on Thursday night in game two of the Southern League Division Series. The series heads back to Trustmark Park on Friday night, tied at a game apiece.
The Braves started the scoring in the second inning. Franco and Joey Meneses hit back-to-back singles off starter Jackson Stephens (0-1) to open the frame. After Willians Astudillo grounded into a double play, Connor Lien ripped an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi pulled away with a four-run third. With one out, MLB rehabber Mallex Smith laid down a bunt single, followed by singles from Levi Hyams and Dustin Peterson, the last to bring in a run for a 2-0 edge.
A batter later, Franco jumped on a first-pitch fastball for a three-run home run, the club’s first in the postseason, stretching the Braves’ lead to 5-0.
Stephens took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Weigel, meanwhile, was dominant over seven frames. He allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out eight. Evan Phillips, Philip Pfeifer and David Peterson combined to finish the shutout over the final two frames.
With the series tied at a game each, the Mississippi Braves entertain the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Trustmark Park for games three and four on Friday and Saturday night. Right-hander Max Povse (4-1, 2.93) gets the start Friday for the Braves against Wahoos right-hander Sal Romano (6-11, 3.52).
First pitch on Friday is slated for 7:00 PM CT, while game four on Saturday will be at 6:00 PM CT. If necessary, game five would return to Pensacola on Sunday at 6:30 PM CT.
