JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

What started as a burglary in Northeast Jackson became a shootout Friday, when a man confronted people trying to steal from his car.

The vehicle owner at the Park at Moss Creek Apartment Complex was shot, and did return fire, but police aren't sure whether the suspects were injured before they drove away in a black or blue Lexus.

David Ingram works out at a park every day across the street, and said he was lucky to have missed the shooting: "Crime is everywhere, so...If you can dodge it. I guess I had the right timing."

The property manager at the apartment complex wouldn't let WLBT near the crime scene. She and another business owner across the street didn't want the neighborhood to be associated with crime.

Many people said burglaries are not uncommon the area, but shootings certainly are.

"Well I was always a little cautious out here anyway, and during the day is kinda creepy. But I always try to pay attention to my surroundings," said Christine Watson, who works out in the area.

And a few more words of wisdom from Ingram: "Hide your valuables. Anything of importance, you need to hide it."

As of 6 p.m.  on Friday, police had not released a description of the suspects or any more information on their whereabouts.
