WILKINSON COUNTY (Mississippi News Now) -

State and federal officials say a $250,000 grant will help people in southwestern Mississippi repair homes damaged by flooding in mid-August.

Three homes were destroyed, 23 had major damage and 58 others had minor damage in Wilkinson County. Most were in the town of Crosby.

The damage fell short of the threshold for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper says in a news release Monday that the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is providing the grant to the new nonprofit Community Based Recovery Committee in Wilkinson County with money remaining from the Alternative Housing Pilot Program that FEMA awarded to Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.

Wilkinson County borders Louisiana, and its floods were caused by the same storm system that deluged parts of that state.
