JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police have identified a man that was shot and killed by a homeowner after he attempted to burglarize a home.

Authorities say that 56-year-old Steve Middleton suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest. It happened in the 1500 block of Martin Luther King Jr Drive.

Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance said the homeowner is not facing any charges because he is protected under the Castle Doctrine.

"The occupant saw the individual breaking in and went and retrieved what we believe was a shotgun and fired striking the suspect," said Vance.

The intruder was shot once in the chest and was pronounced dead on the scene. Vance said the intruder was trying to get through a back sliding door when the homeowner saw the crime unfolding.

"The investigation reveals this individual was shot by an occupant of this residence while the deceased was attempting to burglarize the house," added Vance.

Neighbors and residents in the area near Lanier High School were shaken up by the burglary and the killing. They were afraid to go on camera because of a possible retaliation, but they said burglaries are common in the area.

Neighbors said it's critical homeowners protect themselves, their families, and their homes.

"Some people are not going to tolerate this," said Vance. "They are going to defend their home and it's their right to do so. Unwanted intruders are not welcome and the consequences could be deadly."

Chief Vance said the case will be packaged up and given to the DA's office to present to the Grand Jury.
